The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has announced a citywide clean-up exercise, “Ghana@69 Clean-up”, aimed at sustaining the civic spirit and community responsibility inspired by Ghana’s Independence celebrations.
According to a press release on Thursday, March 5, the exercise, which forms part of the March 2026 edition of National Sanitation Day (NSD), is scheduled for Saturday, March 7, 2026, starting at 6:00 a.m. and continuing until all activities are completed.
The assembly added that the clean-up will focus on intensive sanitation operations at key hotspots across the city, including Agbogbloshie, the Central Business District (CBD), Tuesday Market, Chemu Naa, Kaneshie, and Kwame Nkrumah Interchange.
“Cleansing activities for the day will include desilting and cleaning of drains, sweeping of streets and alleyways, removal of unauthorised posters and banners, and general cleaning of markets, lorry parks, and public spaces to improve environmental conditions and prevent flooding,” the statement said.
The statement added that the AMA will deploy Public Health Officers (Sama-Sama), the Sanitation Taskforce, sweepers, and janitors across all sub-metros, equipped with the necessary logistics and tools to support the operation.
The Assembly also warned residents who fail to comply with directives may face penalties including a fine of up to 100 penalty units, a term of imprisonment ranging from a minimum of 30 days to a maximum of six months, or both. Repeat offenders may also incur additional daily penalties.
“The public is reminded that failure to comply with the sanitation directive or refusal to participate in communal labour constitutes an offence,” the statement added.
