The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) in the Central Region has announced plans to fumigate communities where floodwaters inundated cemeteries during recent flooding incidents, as part of efforts to prevent potential disease outbreaks.
The exercise, which will be carried out in collaboration with National Security and the Ghana Health Service, is intended to reduce the risk of water-borne diseases and other public health threats in affected communities.
Speaking to Citi News on Monday, June 22, 2026, the Central Regional Director of NADMO, Kwesi Dawood, said the intervention had become necessary after floodwaters submerged portions of cemeteries in some areas affected by the floods.
“We are also collaborating with other institutions in the region to embark on fumigation in some sections of the flooded areas. We had some flooding in cemeteries in the area, and when issues like this happen, we have to do the fumigation to curb the likes of water-borne diseases and other health risks that we do not want,” he said.
Mr. Dawood explained that NADMO is working closely with relevant agencies to ensure the fumigation exercise is undertaken promptly to protect public health and minimise the risk of disease transmission in flood-affected communities.
He further commended the Ghana Police Service and the Ghana National Fire Service for their support during rescue and emergency response operations carried out in the wake of the flooding.
According to him, the swift response by the security and emergency services played a critical role in saving lives and reducing the number of casualties recorded during the disaster.
“We want to commend the Ghana Police Service and the Ghana National Fire Service for the extraordinary support they gave us over the week, which brought about the saving of lives of those affected. Their efforts have gone a long way in reducing the fatalities and casualties,” he stated.
Several communities in the Central Region were recently hit by heavy rains that triggered widespread flooding, causing extensive damage to property, displacing residents, and disrupting economic activities.
NADMO says it will continue to assess the impact of the floods while working with partner institutions to provide relief to affected persons and implement measures aimed at preventing further health and environmental risks.
