The Ministry of Education has given the Ghana Education Service (GES) one week to review and ensure full implementation readiness for the revised curriculum for Kindergarten to Primary Six.

The directive follows the presentation of the revised curriculum to the Minister for Education by the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA).

The revised curriculum introduces skills such as coding, electronics, ethics, artificial intelligence, TVET, among others. Speaking to the media, the Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, expressed confidence that the revised curriculum will achieve its intended objectives.

“We have moved away from recommendation to action. Technical and quality assurance remain critical. And today, as NaCCA signs off on the revised curriculum, I would accordingly refer the revised curriculum to the Ghana Education Service.

The GES is given one week from today to review and bring the curriculum up to full implementation readiness and strict quality standards. This is to ensure that the GES, as an operational agency, takes ownership early to guarantee smooth execution in the classroom and align administrative policy with classroom realities”

Meanwhile, the Director-General of the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA), Samuel Ofori Obuobisah Bekoe, also outlined key structural changes in the revised curriculum.

According to him, the curriculum consolidates civic learning and competencies to equip students with the knowledge and skills needed to become effective civic participants in the country.

Moral and ethical education has also been incorporated into the revised curriculum, alongside the teaching of coding. Mr. Bekoe explained that computing and mathematics will form the foundation for introducing students to coding.

“Whatever the skills they acquire is, whether it is jewelry making, coding and others, they will do the practical thing and it is not to make them baby experts but to build their interest first and then the necessary skills they need so that when they move to the higher level of education they will better understand what they have left”.

The study of Chinese has also been proposed under the new curriculum. However, NaCCA says the subject will be optional.
