The Ghana Police Service in the Upper East Region has retrieved a large cache of ammunition concealed at a mechanic workshop near the Assemblies of God Church in Bolgatanga.
According to the police, the recovery was made following a report lodged on Saturday, May 9, 2026, by an auto mechanic who alerted authorities after suspicious items were discovered at the workshop by his apprentice.

The police explained that the apprentice made the discovery while sweeping the premises of the workshop, prompting the mechanic to immediately notify the authorities.
A team of officers from the Upper East Regional Police Command subsequently moved to the scene to investigate the report.

Upon arrival, the officers conducted a search of the area and uncovered two sealed packets hidden inside fertiliser sacks that had been placed in a hen coop on the premises.
Police said the packets contained a total of 1,400 rounds of 7.62×39mm ammunition.
According to the command, each of the two packets contained 700 rounds of ammunition.

The retrieved ammunition has since been taken into police custody to aid ongoing investigations.
The police say efforts are currently underway to establish the source, ownership and intended use of the ammunition.
Authorities have not yet announced any arrests in connection with the discovery.
